When can we perform exterior painting on a building?
One can perform exterior painting tasks when the surface temperature is of at least 4 degrees Celsius. It’s important to make sure that the surface temperature won’t go below 4 degrees during the application and drying time.
How to know what the drying time is for a given paint
The required drying time for a given paint depends on several factors: the ambient air humidity rate, the air and surface temperature, the type de surface to be painted and the type of paint used. It’s important to first refer to the paint gallon label, but don’t forget to also evaluate properly the meteorological conditions by checking the humidity rate and making sure there is no risk for rain or hail.
How to read to surface temperature
To read the temperature of the surface to be painted, use a laser thermometer. It’s a very efficient tool. We even used it to paint the Pointe-Claire Water Tower in Fall 2015.
Can we paint outside even if the temperature is below 4 degrees Celsius?
Yes, it’s possible to paint an exterior surface during the cold season. Indeed, one can paint the exterior façade of a house or any other type of building by installing a heating system on the scaffoldings and by covering them to preserve the heat. This solution is frequently used by construction workers in masonry and paint tasks during winter.
